RJD2 - Work It Out

This is the video for Rjd2's "Work It Out" from 'The Third Hand' (XL Recordings). The vid features Bill Shannon who was born with a degenerative hip condition. His legs cannot carry his own weight and so he has lived a life on crutches. He has developed a new way of moving through life on his skateboard and the crutches. Though this may look like a recreational hobby or a debilitation, it is simply how Bill maneuvers throughout the day. In time to Rjd2's song "Work It Out" we follow Bill as he makes his way around. At the slow start, Bill is descending the courthouse steps in downtown Brooklyn. It's difficult, but he makes it down and the rest you'll just have to watch to understand. Rjd2 plays several extras which you can try to spot as well. The video, directed by Joey Garfield, is one continuous single shot for the length of the song. I definitely missed this when it dropped, sooo freshh. Props to McJawn for the link.

The Worlds Largest Record Collection

Record collector, store owner, and archivist Paul Mawhinney is credited as having the largest private record collection in the world. With over 1 million albums and 1 1/2 million singles the Library of Congress estimates that only 17 percent of the music in his archive is available on CD.

Paul tells the story of building his collection as a traveling salesman, opening Record-Rama, and shows off such gems as an ultra-rare Rolling Stones pressing and the first flat record ever made, which was pressed in 1881.

More on that later. Here's some innovative paintings that I found while cruisin' the web looking for some new art. Innovative ha...inappropriate maybe...amusing...yeahh.

Rest In Peace

So sad to hear that two greats passed away this weekend. Bernie Mac passed away yesterday morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital, he was 50.

And Isaac Hayes, the legendary soul singer, songwriter, musician and producer whose career spanned four decades was discovered by a relative, unresponsive near an exercise machine in their home midday today. They will both be greatly remembered for all of their life-long accomplishments.

More Philly LOVE -- Kerry Getz

A Day In The Life with Kerry Getz. Gotta love the desire to break the deck.

Mmm, so smooth.

Willpowerless Tomorrow!

Tomorrow night the guys from Willpowerless will be playing their first show since completing their new record, "Set The Sun". This isn't the official cd release but word is that the album will be available. The "teaser" for Set The Sun is available for download in an older post.

Two.One.Five Mag Issue #3 Tomorrow!

Yeahyeah, it's almost that time. The highly anticipated release of Issue #3 from Two.One.Five Magazine. Get em while they are hot, likely to be found at your corner store boutique, local food spots, or anywhere that they can drop em. That is if you live in Philly, if you live somewhere outside the city, good luck, you just gotta SUBSCRIBE!

The Price Of Success Tomorrow!

This Friday night (tomorrow) in New York at the IFC Center marks the US theatrical debut of Beautiful Losers, the movie. Like the exhibition and book that proceeded it, Beautiful Losers is a true labor of love that makes you want to go out and create something. It's wonderfully shot and includes a ton of terrific interviews with a fantastic group of artists. The film is the perfect companion to the exhibition and book.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Common Market

I'm so hyped for the release of the new Common Market album, "Tobacco Road". Due out on September 9th, this album will definitely be one to cop off the shelves or digital airways (aka I-Tunes). If you haven't figured it out yet (look through some older posts), I am a big fan of anything that Sabzi touches, and anything that emcees Geologic (Blue Scholars) and RA Scion (Common Market) get on. Seattle is doin' big things in my music life right now. Find out a little more about Common Market here.

The Big Event...the album leak?

I Predict A Riot

Question: What do you get when you mix a Delaware-raised former choirboy and preteen Funk singer with a diehard DIY Hip Hop head who cites country music, Quincy Jones and Kool G. Rap as influences in the same breath?

Answer: One of the dopest Emcees-slash-producers-slash-singers-slash-guitar players-slash-songwriters that you've never heard. You can call him Hezekiah.

Born into a musical family, and raised just outside of Philadelphia, Hezekiah got his chops at an early age, belting out God's greatest hits at his family's church, and before long was singing in his Uncle's band, the Funk Disciples (who dropped some super hard-to-find wax in the mid 70's).

And in case you missed it, Hez dropped a crazy-ill solo album at the end of 2007, titled "I Predict A Riot". This was his second solo album, following his debut, "Hurry Up & Wait". If you haven't heard either, you need to cop them asap. In the meantime, here's a little taste.

The Rundown

I'll put it to you like this.....84 is that shit, and if you don't know you need to verse yourself here or from an older post here. So besides the fact that 84 is on this track, it's actually really dope and was released as the single for the album. Video produced by Philly native Hezekiah, and also featuring Fel Sweetenberg.

Hustle Simmons is the emcee/ producer duo consisting of Camden City, NJ's indie hip-hop mainstay, Dave Ghetto (Nuthouse/ Counterflow) and Philadelphia based producer, Tha S Ence. The album, released on June 24th is available on I-Tunes now.

Faux News

I usually steer clear of all the bullshit politics but I couldn't stop thinking about this. 2db put me on to this attack on Faux News as Ex-White House Press Secretary, Scott McClellan, says that Faux News is a propaganda tool for the White House.

Fox in the White House: It is one of those things you kind of assume to be true all along… and yet are shocked when hard confirmation actually comes. Our fourth story tonight, from the former White House press secretary himself, word that the Bush White House routinely sent–and as far as we know, still sends– literal talking points to Fox News for its primetime propagandists, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and others… to spout, as if ventriloquist dummies, as if they had thought of it themselves, as if they had come to those opinions independently, as if there had been a process either fair… or balanced.
