The Price Of Success Tomorrow!

This Friday night (tomorrow) in New York at the IFC Center marks the US theatrical debut of Beautiful Losers, the movie. Like the exhibition and book that proceeded it, Beautiful Losers is a true labor of love that makes you want to go out and create something. It's wonderfully shot and includes a ton of terrific interviews with a fantastic group of artists. The film is the perfect companion to the exhibition and book.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Common Market

I'm so hyped for the release of the new Common Market album, "Tobacco Road". Due out on September 9th, this album will definitely be one to cop off the shelves or digital airways (aka I-Tunes). If you haven't figured it out yet (look through some older posts), I am a big fan of anything that Sabzi touches, and anything that emcees Geologic (Blue Scholars) and RA Scion (Common Market) get on. Seattle is doin' big things in my music life right now. Find out a little more about Common Market here.

I Predict A Riot

Question: What do you get when you mix a Delaware-raised former choirboy and preteen Funk singer with a diehard DIY Hip Hop head who cites country music, Quincy Jones and Kool G. Rap as influences in the same breath?

Answer: One of the dopest Emcees-slash-producers-slash-singers-slash-guitar players-slash-songwriters that you've never heard. You can call him Hezekiah.

Born into a musical family, and raised just outside of Philadelphia, Hezekiah got his chops at an early age, belting out God's greatest hits at his family's church, and before long was singing in his Uncle's band, the Funk Disciples (who dropped some super hard-to-find wax in the mid 70's).

And in case you missed it, Hez dropped a crazy-ill solo album at the end of 2007, titled "I Predict A Riot". This was his second solo album, following his debut, "Hurry Up & Wait". If you haven't heard either, you need to cop them asap. In the meantime, here's a little taste.

The Rundown

I'll put it to you like this.....84 is that shit, and if you don't know you need to verse yourself here or from an older post here. So besides the fact that 84 is on this track, it's actually really dope and was released as the single for the album. Video produced by Philly native Hezekiah, and also featuring Fel Sweetenberg.

Hustle Simmons is the emcee/ producer duo consisting of Camden City, NJ's indie hip-hop mainstay, Dave Ghetto (Nuthouse/ Counterflow) and Philadelphia based producer, Tha S Ence. The album, released on June 24th is available on I-Tunes now.
