Will they Set The Sun?

So the Willpowerless boys wrapped up the mixing and mastering for their new demo "Set The Sun" about a week and a half ago. I must say that I'm impressed, the final mixes are awe-sounding. The guys are still planning the official cd release so stay up to date with their myspace for more info. They have a pre-release show at The Khyber on August 8th. And if you want an idea of what these guys sound like, peep the older post, or download the "teaser" for Set The Sun that I received last night. Thanks fellas.

Graffiti UnDead

A question of ethics and art. A young photographer documents the quickly disappearing sreet art in his neighborhood. A young graffiti artist finds out that someone has photographed his street art and sold it in a gallery.

Hmm, I've gotta say that I don't agree that this photographer should be able to sell these pieces without giving some sort of profit to the actual artist. As much as I condone the act of taking the pictures of other people's art(which I do all the time), there is no way that I would ever sell or turn a blind eye to someone that is selling pictures of other artists work without permission.

50 Cents Per Idea

"Jake Bronstein recently bought a toy vending machine off the Internet. He filled the toy capsules with ideas of fun things to do and started placing the machine in various spots around New York. For 50 cents you get the original toy, an idea, and a map to guide you to the location for your idea. Each capsule also contains a quarter, refunding half of your purchase price (the machine wouldn’t let him charge less than 50 cents.)"

Talib Kweli Documentary Trailer

Almost 10 years in the making, Okayplayer says it's coming soon.

Don't think, just shoot.

Every single second has its own unique, light, grey, colourful, woolly, profound, flat mood. Your life is not going to wait for your camera, its rules and the fooling around involved. Either - click - you have captured the situation as it is, or you haven't. This is just 1 of the 10 golden rules of lomography. If you aren't familiar with Lomo cameras, now is the time, they are cheap, durable, produce unique pictures, and you will never miss a moment.

Lomo offers a very wide variety of cameras that all serve different purposes. They have the Colorsplash Camera has 12 color flash options with color splashes that can be used in the same manner as normal flash photography (low light situations) or to add a burst of color to regular photos (whenever you want). The Actionsampler Flash sets off 4 separate high-quality lenses in a clockwise motion, making 4 split images on one picture (quadrant style). The Fisheye Camera sees a sweeping 170-degree view compacting everything around you into a single circular image. The Frogeye Camera is their first water proof camera, ready to work anywhere there is water: the ocean, the shower, the sprinkler, a rainy day. This is just a basic overview of what Lomo offers, they carry these cameras in many different options and models, and also many others. They even have a communal Lomography website where users can upload and share their pictures with anyone.

Oh and did I mention that almost all of their cameras are between $40 and $100, yeahh. You can find the Fisheye and a few others at most Urban Outfitters locations, or just order online.

Illvibe!

So in my day to day search for new music, I found that what I've been searching so hard for has been right under my nose the entire time. Meet the Illvibe Collective. Since its founding in 2000, Illvibe has been solidifying its eminence as Philadelphia's most prolific, well-respected DJ crew. An amalgam of partyrockers and turntablists extraordinaire whose combined experience totals over a half-century, this five-man family, comprised of Statik, Panek, Phillee Blunt, Lil Dave and Skipmode, has been making an indelible mark on the Illadelph music scene, both individually and as a team. Pick your poison: dance floors, mix tapes or radio airwaves, and its guaranteed that ILLVIBE COLLECTIVE will rock em well -- with their loyal, worldwide following as co-signers.

For more info on all of their projects and releases visit Illvibe.net

I'm seriously hooked on the two radio shows/podcasts, The Difference and The Sure Shot, both of which are free to download. You can also subscribe to both for free in I-Tunes.

Also check out DJ Statik's blog, where you can find free downloads for mixtapes from the Illvibe archive. I highly recommend "A Taste of Conga".

Martha Cooper

Now in her sixties, Martha Cooper began shooting graffiti over twenty five years ago. A true veteran in the hip hop photo world, she is still documenting and searching for her next discovery. If folks like Martha Cooper weren’t taking shots of pieces back in the day there would little or no record of such graf greats as Dondi, Iz the Wiz, Seen, Blade, Zephyr, and Lee. Check out the interview with Martha from CurrenTV below, and The Hip-Hop Files from a previous post.

We can have a portable turntable DJ in the band?

Not yet but very soon. Since 2004 inventor Thierry Alari has been working to turn the DJ world upside down by creating a portable all-in-one scratch instrument capable of being played while walking, standing, or sitting. At first glance, the Scratchophone looks like a cross between a hand drum and turntable, but upon further inspection it’s quickly revealed to be much, much more.

Scratch musicians are able to comfortably perform on stage thanks to stable tracking provided by a hanging micro tonearm, adjustable crossfader wrist position (+/- 15°), and the inclusion of turntable start/stop mechanism w/ adjustable pitch. While needing only a reliable power source, vinyl, and a skilled turntablist, the Scratchophone delivers a near complete portable scratch experience utilizing components from a Stanton TT500 direct drive turntable, Vestax VMC-002xLu mixer, and Eclectic Breaks Pro X Fade Crossfader.

Still only a prototype, version 1.0 has an expected date of September ‘08 with plans to make available "empty" Scratchophone cases for those wishing to implement their own customized setup.

See the Scratchophone website for more info and check out the video of Grand Wizard Theodore and DJ Fade Wizard performing a live demonstration.
